Our Standard American Diet is truly SAD.  We are increasing our risk of disease by the foods that we eat each and every day.  The fast foods and convenience foods that we consume on a daily basis are nutrient deficient and full of unhealthy ingredients.  Nutrition and Wellness Consulting is committed to keeping up with current nutrition information in the news.

Here are a few stories that you may find interesting.

Isolated Antioxidant Supplements Fail to Prevent Cancer

Findings published on Tuesday, 12/30/08, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute followed two other important studies that also did not show that various antioxidant supplements could prevent cancer.  “Although a healthful dietary pattern rich in fruits and vegetables may lower cancer risk, such benefits cannot be mimicked by simply popping a few (isolated) vitamin supplements,” Dr. JoAnn Manson of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston said in a statement.

Maternal Employment, Work Schedules, and Children’s Body Mass Index

Recently a study done jointly by researchers at American University, Cornell University and the University of Chicago and published in Child Development showed a link between the number of hours that a mother worked and the BMI of their children. While the subject of this study does show that childhood obesity is on the rise, something we have all been made aware of in the media, the real issue of children's increasing BMI is most likely linked to unhealthy food choices. Education is the key here. Children and adults alike need to move from fast food and processed food to fresh, whole foods, including a lot more fruits and vegetables. The "guilt" shouldn't be placed on the mother, both parents and child care providers alike need to provide healthy choices for the children in their care. Need a good meal planning book to get rid of that guilt? Try "Mom, What's For Dinner?" (to the right)
